About David Joy
I am: a software and systems engineer by profession; interested in flying (light aircraft) and aviation in general, computer programming, open source software and especially GNU/Linux, cinematography, sound mixing and design, technology and science, music and playing the piano; various other things.
I lived for most of the first 22 years of my life near Chertsey, Surrey. I went to prep school at Milbourne Lodge, Esher, between the ages of 8 and 13. From 13 to 18 I was an academic scholar at Winchester College, Hampshire. While at Winchester I developed interests in computer systems and film-making, both of which have taken up significant amounts of my time over the years.
After leaving school I worked for a year and a half at Easyspace Limited, a web hosting and domain registration company at the time based in West Byfleet, Surrey, supporting their range of Linux virtual dedicated servers.
Between September 2004 and July 2007 I studied for a BA in Media Arts at Royal Holloway, University of London. I graduated with a first class degree in July 2007.
While at university and immediately afterwards I also worked on a number of films, which are documented on my film CV.
Between January 2008 and July 2013 I worked as a systems engineer, most recently as Lead Engineer, at Pulsant Limited (a.k.a. DediPower), Reading, where I was responsible for designing, configuring and supporting large-scale Internet hosting infrastructure, most commonly based on Linux and VMware vSphere.
Since July 2013 I have been a senior sofware engineer at Bloomberg LP, a global financial information and media company. I work on a high availability, massively scalable, low latency messaging and email platform called Bloomberg Message (MSG).
